Sense of Entitlement

Sense of Entitlement

Acrylic on Paper Mache Relief, 9.5×9.5″ Sense of Entitlement (Side Views)

The last time my mother was here for a visit she let me know that it was not okay for me to be using a fry pan that the teflon was wearing out on. Though I am not a classic tree hugger I really don’t like how much we add to the landfills. I held on to the old non-usable pan for quite some time, thinking surely it could be good for something. Last month it occurred to me to remove the handle and cover the whole thing in paper mache. I considered just painting on the paper covered surface, but once I start paper maching I tend to get carried away, so the swirls and figures just started developing. Building up the relief actually went much faster than the painting. I wanted the colors bright, but not garish, which proved more challenging than I would have thought. Anyway, I am pleased with the result and I have my eye on a couple more pans that may be wearing out soon.

You are invited to the artist reception on Sunday, July 12, 2009 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m at the Bowen Center. For more information, call Around Back at Rocky’s Place at 706-265-6030 or The Bowen Center for the Arts at 706-216-ARTS (2787).

3 of my ceramic bird pieces I made while I was in Cancun and my Odd Bird mask will be in this show. This the first exhibit I have taken part in since 2003 so I am very excited. And with the Canvas Project going up on July 31 I feel like a major shift in my artistic presence is starting.

Yes we did!

Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.

- Martin Luther King Jr.,

Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech, Dec. 11, 1964.

This was the quote in a daily emails I get from sojo.net yesterday. I think they picked it perfectly. Because of where I live and who I work and worship with I haven’t been able to be as openly giddy about the election results as I would like to be. But this weekend I’ll be seeing all my family as we gather to celebrate my Grandfather’s 83rd birthday and as long as my step-father or sister-in-law aren’t close by I’m ready to do some full out celebrating for the change we are going to get. :)

Trying Threadless again…

August 18, 2008 on 1:19 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

It’s been almost a year since I tried submitting a design to threadless, but things are extremely slow at work today, so I took my sketch from last week’s Illustration Friday and redrew it in illustrator. Perhaps people will like it better than my previous entries.

Air Head - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

If you have some time on your hands and would like to give it a $5 that would be just swell. :)

More cool art…

It seems like lately every which way I surf I’m seeing great artwork on the internet. My coworker Jon just showed me this site full gorgeous illustrations.

Magnets on Display

I have another set of 30 magnets on a display, packed up and ready to ship out to Carolina Beach, North Carolina as soon as I can get myself up to the post office. Of course as busy as we are in the office there’s a good chance I won’t have time to do that for a couple days. I’m very close to missing “the season” at Carolina Beach, but there’s nothing much I can do about that at this point.

I have another 30 magnets that have no display built for them yet. I need to decide if I want to try and have them ready to send to Boone with Sebastian when he goes to pick up the kids next week, or if I should just photograph them individually and put them up on Etsy and see if any movement happens. I’m all out of the magnets I put in the bottle tops and before I invest in ordering another roll of them it would be nice to actually sell a few.

Oooo, my sweet husband just called and said he was going to the post office for me. Yeah! Magnets on the move.

Alchemy

July 10, 2008 on 11:01 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments
Yesterday itunes offered the audio book version of “The Alchemist” as a free download.Paulo Coelho is not my favorite but he is usually pretty interesting. I listened to the whole thing yesterday while I was working and I really enjoyed it.  Listening to a story makes my day fly by and as long as I’m not doing translating work it doesn’t distract me from making ads. The book stayed in my head all evening and obviously I’m still thinking about it this morning. At one point the Alchemist tells the boy, “There is only one way to learn–through action.” That seems to be the repeating theme for me these days. I must stop just thinking about the things I want to do and go ahead and do them. If I keep waiting till I know what I’m doing to get started I will never get started. This is not a new or profound thought but for some reason it is one that gives me a great deal of trouble. Sour Illuminated

inspiration

January 3, 2008 on 8:07 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

So, I’ve been spending the afternoon typesetting little pieces of text fillers that we use in the phone book when I came across this one…

Are you waiting for inspiration?

Deciding you are going to sit down to do some kind of work is often the hardest part of getting a task accomplished. Once you do sit down and begin, often something remarkable takes place, says Steven Pressfield (www.stevenpressfield.com) in The War of Art. A whole sequence of events is set into motion by that one act.

Pressfield says Somerset Maugham was once asked whether he wrote on a schedule or only when struck by inspiration. “I write only when inspiration strikes,” he replied. “Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o’clock sharp.”

According to this all I need to do is set a time to make art and then do it. I am going to try. I have been doing better. I did manage to make some masks for our company’s New Year’s Eve Masquerade ball…
